“FORMULA 1” BULL RACE at PAMEKASAN, MADURA


For the people of Madura, bull race (Karapan Sapi) is not just an annual festival. Karapan sapi also not just an inherited tradition from the older generation to the next generation. It has a prestige value that will uplift the dignity of pride in the community.


HISTORY
Kerapan sapi first introduced by the Prince Katandur from Sapudi Island, Sumenep in the 13th century. After the harvest season, as an expression of joy the Prince invite all people in his village to hold a cattle race. The land that has been harvested used for cattle race. The tradition then spread across the island and preserved until now.

OVERVIEW
The cattle for kerapan sapi is chosen with certain characteristics. It has specific breast posture which is little to the bottom, long-backed, tight hoofed, rigid upright and sturdy, long-tailed and fat. The treatment is very different from ordinary cows. Their feeding and health are tightly controlled; at times they are also given herbal medicine. Enormous cost of their care often not worth the reward if they win the race, but there is a pride for their owners and the cattle price rises very high.

A single festival is estimated attended by no less than 1000-1500 spectators. Each regency has it's own karapan sapi. The winners compete in annual national championship held in the end of the year. In 2011, the national championship will be held on Soenarto Hadiwidjojo Stadium Pamekasan, Jln Stadion, October 23. A day earlier, there is a cow contest (Sapi sonok) at Bakorwil IV field, Jln Slamet Riady, Pamekasan. This festival is an annual routine which is usually held every tobacco post-harvest.

HOW TO GET THERE
Pamekasan can be reached by car or bike through the Suramadu bridge. The one way toll is Rp 30,000 for a car or van and Rp 3,000 for a motorbike. The traditional transportation is taking a public ferry from Tanjung Perak-Surabaya, to Kamal-Bangkalan.There are also buses from Purabaya bus station, Surabaya to some destination to Madura.
